Run any OS on any OS!

Many times, you download or you have any app which is made for any other OS and they are running any different OS. Or sometimes you want to test any OS but you can’t because of creation of CD/DVD and then installation of OS, and if something goes wrong, you may suffer from data loss other issues. This makes us helpless and not to try new Operating Systems.

And there is a solution for this problem. You can use the target Operating System Virtually. To run the Operating Systems you need a Software which will create virtual hardware for you to run new guest Operating System.

The Softwares which are widely used for this are VM Ware, Virtual Box etc.

The Host OS is the OS on which all the virtual OS are going to be installed. The Guest OS is the OS which will be installed Virtually on the Host OS.

VMWare

VMWare is the Virtualization Software which is available for both Windows and Linux Host Operating Systems. It is also having some of its specific features. But it is also having some of its complexities. For more info on VM Ware you can go to https://www.vmware.com/

Virtual Box

Virtual Box is also one of the Virtualization Software which is Open Source and is widely used. It is very easy to configure and easy to use Software from Oracle. It's available for all available OS and can run any OS as guest. The steps which must be followed to run any quest OS on Virtual Box are as follows and they will be same for all hosts.

VMWare

Step 1

Download and Install the Virtual Box. To download it go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads.

Virtual Box - New Virtual Machine

Step 3

Virtual Box - Configure memory of Virtual Machine

Step 4

Now you will be prompt to select the virtual hard disk. Here in this dialog box you can select the existing one or you can create the new one. Here I am creating a new virtual Hard Disk.

Step 5

In the next prompt you will press next after which you will be prompt to select the Hard Disk Storage Type.

Here you can select the Dynamically expanding Storage or Fixed type Storage. Dynamic Storage is useful when you have low free space in your Hard Disk and fixed is helpful when when you have a large free space on your HD.

Dynamic Storage expands according to the number and the size of files stored inside that virtual HD and it will expand till its maximum select. I have selected here Dynamically Expanding Storage. Here you can also attach a non booting hard disk to your OS.

Step 6

On the next step you have to select the location to sore the virtual hard disk and the maximum allowed size for the virtual hard disk.

Here I have selected 8 GB as maximum allowed size for it because maximum requirement is of Windows 7 which is of 7 GB approximatively.

Step 7

Now on next prompt your virtual system creation is finished by pressing Finish.

Step 8

Now select the recently created the Virtual Machine and then press the Settings button on the mar below menu bar.

Step 9

Now on next window, click on Storage in Lift Side pane which will show the storage options in right side. Now you will see a tree of IDE controller under Storage tree. Now click on Empty under that IDE tree which will show the IDE options in its right side. There select the CD/DVD image or the CD/DVD drive by which you can install or try the new OS on your Virtual Machine. After doing this press OK on the Settings Window of your Virtual Machine.

Step 10

Now done Now Select the Virtual Machine, which you have created, in the left side and then press Start in the tool bar below the Menu Bar. Here I am showing the screenshots of the Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Edition which is a famous Linux flavor.

An voila, we have successfully set up Ubuntu on Windows Machine.

Now a days, virtualization has become the necessary part of the modern servers.
